About this market
Soweto Market is a busy trading area in central Lusaka, just off Los Angeles Road and close to Lusaka City Market. Covered market buildings, open trading spaces and surrounding shops make it a place for everyday shopping and buying stock for a business. If you are meeting a particular trader, ask for their stall number or a nearby landmark before setting off.
Fresh produce is at the heart of Soweto’s trade. Farmers and traders bring food into the capital, selling directly to shoppers as well as in larger quantities to retailers. The market also supplies smaller markets around Lusaka, so it is an important link between Zambia’s growers, independent sellers and the city’s households. Expect a working market focused on practical purchases and wholesale trade.
Plan for a morning visit, especially for fresh produce or wholesale buying, and allow time to walk between sellers and compare what is available. For a specific purchase, check your chosen trader’s opening time and stock before travelling. Bring the stall details with you and agree on a convenient entrance or meeting point.
