- Zambia hosts over 105,000 refugees, asylum-seekers and others of concern. The majority of people of concern (POCs) are refugees from the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC), Burundi, as well as Angolan and former Rwandan refugees. They reside in the three designated refugee settlements of Mantapala, Meheba and Mayukwayukwa, as well as in Lusaka and other urban centres. UNHCR has four offices in Zambia, including a Representation Office in Lusaka, Field Offices in Solwezi and Kawambwa, and a Field Unit in Kaoma. UNHCR, working with Government line ministries, sister UN agencies and other partners, provides comprehensive response and solutions-oriented support in various sectors, including livelihoods, health, education, sports and self-reliance activities to POCs. Within the context of the Global Compact on Refugees (GCR) and the Comprehensive Refugee Response (CRR), UNHCR also advocates for the inclusion of refugees and their immediate hosts in the national service delivery system, applying the whole-of-society approach. In the context of the COVID-19 pandemic, UNHCR has adapted work modalities to continue delivering protection and assistance to POCs in Zambia in close coordination with the Government of Zambia and other stakeholders.
