The Ministry Of Justice (MOJ) is charged with the responsibility of facilitating the administration of justice and promoting the observance of the rule of law.
According to the Government Gazette notice No. 183 of 23rd March, 2012, MOJ is responsible for the following functions:-
- Administration of Estates
- Advanced Legal education
- Debt recovery
- Domestication of International Treaties and Conventions Extradition
- Human Rights and Governance
- Law Revision and Reform
- Laws of Zambia
- Legal advice and Policy
- Legal Aid
- Legal Practitioners
In addition the Ministry is responsible for the following statutory Bodies and institutions;-
Council of Law Reporting Judicial Complaints Authority Legal Aid Board National Prosecution Authority Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education Zambia Law Development Commission
SERVICES PROVIDED TO THE GENERAL PUBLIC
Services which the MOJ directly provides to the General Public include:- Administration of Estates; Supervision of Private Liquidations and Receiver to Companies; and Management of Liquidations and Receiverships when appointed. These services are offered through the Department of the Administrator General and Official Receiver. Currently the department has three offices in Lusaka, Ndola and Livingstone.
Other services available to the public, particularly legal Aid, receiving Complaints against misconduct by Judicial Officials and Advanced Legal Education are provided through autonomous Statutory Bodies/ Institutions, Legal Aid Board, Judicial Complaints Authority and Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education (ZIALE) respectively.
