History of Organisation
The Lusaka Hotel is the oldest existing Hotel in Zambia Strategically located in the centre of the business district of Lusaka. The Hotel was established in 1914 and has been in operation since. Over the years, the hotel changed hands and is now under the ownership of Horizon Holdings since 2000. The owners through a strong management team focus on meeting the customer’s needs and restoring the old traditional values of the Lusaka Hotel. The Lusaka Hotel has 80 en suite rooms with DSTV available (30 rooms have been converted into apartments). The rooms now need to be upgraded to provide guests with comfortable accommodation. In addition, the public areas, conference rooms and restaurants have to be rehabilitated. The Hotel has parking space on Cairo road, on Katondo Street, and a secure carpark (70 bays) with a 24-hour security on Cha Cha Cha Rd.
Mr. David Thompson – Managing Director of The Lusaka Hotel announced the work had commenced to repaint and restore the entire building including the roof and all fascias. Mr. Thompson stressed the point ‘The Lusaka Hotel’ is listed as a Heritage Site Building and therefore no structural changes will be made and that all the work that would be carried out would ensure the building is restored to its Past Glory.
A second phase of rehabilitation will be the upgrading of all the services to include the water and electrical reticulation which would be done by Hospitality Properties, the owners of the building at the same time as the external works on the building are taking place, Hotel Services will also be upgraded. Painting of the Rooms and Apartments has commenced which will be followed by all the Corridors, Public areas, Restaurant and Conference Rooms.
The next phase will be the complete upgrading of the Bathrooms which will be retiled and new fixtures fitted. All the old carpets will be replaced with new tiles and rugs.
In room amenities will include new TVs, Fridges and Safes.
The Restaurant and Conference Rooms will receive a complete ‘Make-over’ in a classic style fitting the 100 years of History.
Mr. Thompson emphasised that “The need for the rehab is now due in order to maintain our competitive edge and to add value to the Heritage Landscape of the City. In addition, we are a proud of our Traditional Standards and Value of Service from our loyal staff and we owe it to them to ensure the Hotel and its History is maintained. The total programme will take 6 months to complete and the “New look” Lusaka Hotel will be launched in July 2017.
